Aside from fluid and refined UX design, and the strong mythical SEO ranking, a “good” website is one that loads fast. We are impatient, and if we’re going to venture outside the feed of our favorite social apps, we expect a website to quickly show us what we came for.

Optimizing Your Website is more than just SEO.

People come to your website to see what you’ve got, and maybe eventually make a purchase. My advice is to always lead with clear, crisp, bright photos. And make sure those photos load fast.

Show Them The Goods.

There are a few things that slow websites down:

  • Shitty hosting (AHEM, Bluehost)
  • Bulky code
  • Large media

It’s your web designer’s job to keep the code light. But if you don’t want to pay for a smarter web designer, or better hosting, then the least you can do for your website is optimize your photos.

The photos are too damn big!

Photos are sized in 2 ways – by their “physical size” (think pixels), and by their storage/file size (how much space they take on the disk/server)

For your website/store you want to keep your photos between 900 and 1200 px wide, and you want to keep their file size under 200KB. Ideally, you want them under 100KB but sometimes you’ll go over.

Here are the image optimizing tools I use for  my photos:

  1. Bulk Resize Photos (for image size)
  2. TinyJPG (for file size)
  3. Polarr (for photo edits)

Lot’s if inventory photos? No time or patience to edit? Your solution is here. Nineke Creative edits, enhances, and optimizes photos for websites, online stores, and blogs.
